Norochcholai Coal Power Plant (NCPP): A Landmark in Sri Lanka’s Energy Landscape

The Norochcholai Coal Power Plant, also known as the Lak Vijaya Power Plant, represents Sri Lanka’s largest coal-fired energy project, with a total generation capacity of 900 MW. Situated in the Puttalam District, this vital facility provides a significant portion of the country’s energy needs, underscoring its strategic importance to the nation’s power infrastructure.

Constructed in three phases from 2007 to 2014, NCPP is a testament to ambitious infrastructure development aimed at enhancing national energy security. The plant’s location along the Kalpitiya Peninsula presented unique logistical challenges, requiring innovative solutions to mitigate environmental and social impacts during its construction and operation.

Our Role in Supporting the Norochcholai Power Plant

Colombo Logistics World played an instrumental role in supporting the successful realization of the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant through precise planning, innovative solutions, and seamless execution. 

  • Comprehensive Freight Handling: Successfully managed over 1,000 sea freight shipments, 200 air cargo deliveries, and 15 barge shipments of over-dimensional cargo. These efforts ensured the timely delivery of critical materials needed for the project’s phased construction.
  • Innovative Solutions: Overcame challenges such as shallow lagoons and bridge restrictions by deploying alternative transport methods, including the use of fishery boats to pull barges.
  • Expert Ship Agency Services: Facilitated over 15 bulk carriers with expert handling and port services, ensuring efficient material transfer without disruptions.
  • Operational Excellence: Delivered under tight timelines, adhering to the highest standards of safety, compliance, and precision throughout the project’s duration.
